Stop At: Chinese Temple and Museum Chung Wah, 25 Woods St, Darwin, Northern Territory 0800 Australia

This excellent little museum explores Chinese settlement in the Top End. The adjacent temple has a particularly calming ambience, punctuated by scarlet lanterns and smouldering incense sticks.

The Temple site dates from about 1887. After some damage from bombing in WWII, there was extensive looting of the Temple – statues were found scattered all around Darwin. At one stage, an attempt was made to burn the Temple but when the flames reached the main beam, the fire mysteriously went out; believed by Chinese elders to be due to heavenly intervention. The temple remained closed from 1948 until 1959, when it was reopened.

In 1974, Cyclone Tracy destroyed the Temple and a new temple was built with the help of local architect Peter Dermoudy. It is believed that correct siting means prosperity and happiness for the people, and much care must be taken. Consequently, the new Temple was built on the same site facing the same direction as the site that was selected in 1887 by neomancers, who considered the location in relation to sky, water, land.

What a fantastic way to see Darwin! I lived here in my youth and wanted to show my old stomping ground to my family, I thought I knew it pretty well but Kathrine was so incite-full She made me fall in love with this city all over again, showing me places I had no idea existed! We decided to book this tour as we had only 2 days left of our trip and still so much to see, this tour was perfect as Kathryn was very flexible and tailor-made our trip to suit our interest and lucky for us travelling with two kids under two she was very considerate to our need for regular nappy changes, snack breaks, avoiding the heat of the day and the kids loved her warmth and welcoming nature! This is what makes this tour so special, it's private and personal making you see Darwin through a locals perspective rather than as a tourist. Katherine has a deep respect for the land and its people and shared some beautiful knowledge that will stay in my heart forever. My biggest regret of our Darwin trip was that we didn’t do this tour at the start because Kathrine showed us so many spots we wanted to return to but with our trip over we now HAVE to come back for more! Loved the 2hr walking tour, pictures don’t do it justice so you’ll have to just let Katherine show you around! After the walking tour, we went for the city highlight's tour, where Katherine shared some of Darwin’s heritage sights and breathtakingly insta-gramable locations. I won’t give more away as I think this was my fav part of the day and highly recommend having Katherine in the car with you (we asked her to jump in our care) as we had so many wildlife and cultural questions we could just bounce questions off her and she had all the answers! Thank you for your time, Katherine, we all had such a wonderful day exploring Darwin with you. I now have new favourite spots to come back to next time were in the top end!
